Welcome to the 5th annual roundup of equestrian Instagram accounts to follow! This year’s collection is a diverse group of people and types of accounts. From sidesaddle to retro looks, hilarity and equestrian small businesses, there’s something for everyone in this list of horse-themed Instagram accounts. 1. Equestrian Noire–Jamillah Simms AKA @equestrian_noire is THE account to follow for Vogue-like images and inspirational quotes on life and horses. Every single post is a treat. If you love paging through fashion magazines, you’ll love scrolling through her account. The finger waves in this one are making me have emoji heart eyes.

2. Donna Smyth Fine Art–Donna is someone I know in real life. Her art is as beautiful as her soul. Her specialty is oil painting and she loves bringing Mustangs to life on the canvas. She also does commissioned work. Fun Fact: she is the mother and groom to my trainer Chloe Smyth! Follow @donnasmythfineart for exciting equine art.

3. Hers Equine–Katie of @hersequine is an avid horsewoman and inventive artist. She paints stunning equine images on a variety of non-traditional surfaces such as dresses, skirts and jackets. What a unique take on equestrian fashion! And her dog May is quite adorable when she makes appearances on the ‘gram.

4. Equis Art Gallery–From fantastical to realistic, brought to life via sculpture, oil or acrylic, the equestrian art you’ll find @equisartgallery will capture your interest if your heart beats horse. This retail art gallery located in Red Hook, New York ships worldwide. Happy shopping!

5. Jodhpurs & Sons–Old Hollywood glamor reigns (reins?) supreme over at @jodpursandsons. The Instagram bio reads, “Curating one of the (almost) forgotten essentials of sartorial style. . . basically photos of people wearing jodhpurs.” After scrolling this page you’ll want to hunt down your own pair of elephant ear jodhpurs.

6. Vintage Egyptologist–If you’re a history buff like me, Dr. Colleen Darnell’s Instagram account @vintage_egyptologist filled with 1920s, 1930s (and beyond) looks, and historical facts about the Egyptians will thrill you. If only high school history class had been this interesting.

7. Pegasus Diaries–This is a personal page focusing on one dreamy 17.1 Irish Draught, fox hunting and English country life. If you’re feeling a bit hemmed in by pandemic restrictions, head over to @pegagusdiaries to escape to the green countryside via between-the-ears shots and videos.

8. Wayne-DuPage Hunt–The @waynedupagehunt Instagram account is special to me as this is the first fox hunt I ever rode in–a very long time ago, as a kid, on a borrowed 25-year old bald-faced chestnut Quarter Horse named Jim Dandy. The photos of autumn Midwestern mornings exude an ethereal beauty and transport me home.

9. Devonzaside–Devon Zebrovious, is a side-saddle riding, fox hunting attorney, from the East Coast who was the USEF National Champion three years in a row (2013-2015) in Ladies Side Saddle. You might remember her from a stunning Sidelines cover she appeared on with her side saddle habit. It was a really cool look. As with the other fox hunting accounts, it’s fun to see what the landscapes look like in other parts of the country. Follow @devonzaside to ride along.

This group contains trainers, amateurs, movers and shakers and one hilarious entertainer.
10. Horse Crazy the Book–Have you read Horse Crazy yet? (If your answer is no, you must put it on your “to read” list. Click here to read my full Horse Crazy book review.) This is the account of author and New York Times reporter Sarah Maslin Nir. Her account gives a behind-the-scenes look into Sarah’s equestrian life. She posts riding videos (I enjoyed watching her in a side saddle lesson–that’s something I’ve always wanted to try), images of her horses and cute pup named Hero, and fun facts. For example, she recently did a deep dive into the use of coolers for horses and shared the origin story. If your heart beats horse you’ll definitely feel like Sarah is a riding buddy you’ve yet to meet, so give @horsecrazythebook a follow.

11. The Black Cowgirl–I think I found Caitlin Gooch, @theblackcowgirl, through her other account @saddleupandread (You NEED to follow both accounts). She founded the non-profit Saddle Up and Read as an innovative way to encourage children to read by incentivizing them with horses! Not only is Caitlin promoting literacy, she is doing her part to set the historical record straight. She published The Black Equestrian Coloring Book in 2020. Here is the description: “The purpose of this coloring book is to teach children about the underrepresented Black equestrians in history in a fun and educational way. . . Through reading and coloring this book, children will learn that these Black equestrians existed, the amazing ways they contributed to society, and that equestrianism isn’t limited to one specific race or gender.” Amen to that!

12. May As Well Event–Do you follow blogger Emily and her adorable (and opinionated) mare May? Well, Emily is a real life barn friend of mine who just yesterday (at the time of this writing) gave me an incredible riding tip that I think is going to transform Knight’s trot (I won’t get into details here because–off topic). Anyway, she is a ton of fun to ride around with and a highly skilled equestrian. She’s good peeps so be sure to give @may_as_well_event a follow.

13. Tara Tibbetts–Foxhunter (she’s a host on Horse Radio Network’s monthly fox hunting episode). Crazy dog lady (I’ve lost count on how many she owns, but it’s the most of anyone I’ve ever heard of in my life). Adopter of a Chincoteague pony named Gene. 14. Jake Nodar–If you need a good laugh or crave fashion inspiration involving Crocs, reality T.V. star of Naked and Afraid and horse trainer Jake Nodar is outlandishly hilarious. I had a chance to interview Jake last year for a Sidelines article and I have to say, I was cracking up pretty much throughout the whole interview. What is really cool about Jake is how self-deprecating and ridiculous he is, yet he is a serious horseman. He has ridden and trained in what he calls “a cornucopia of disciplines.” Probably the most exotic of them was his stint as a lance-wielding knight on the History Channel’s show Full Metal Jousting (he was considered the show’s underdog, but actually “unhorsed” a seasoned dinner theater jouster, lol). 15. Chloe Smyth–If there’s one professional rider account you need to add to your Instagram stream it is that of my trainer, Chloe Smyth of White Horse Eventing. She is an intrepid eventer and super kind human being. If you want more of a behind the scenes of what it’s like to experience a training session with her, read my blog post The One in Which We Go to a Cross Country Clinic. This woman has done wonders for my horse Knight and really helped with my confidence. I still have so much to learn, but I’m thrilled with how far Knight and I have come under her tutelage. Cool Small Equestrian Biz Accounts
This next section of accounts represent horse lovers who offer great products (many of them are Esty Equestrians, previously featured on the blog) or services and just have a certain “fun factor” you’ll notice when you follow along.
16. Equestriess Atelier–Breeks and trews are all the rage over at @equestriess_atelier! Now if you’re like me and need a decoder (and history lesson), Wendy (the shop owner) will be happy to educate you. I currently have my eye on these moss breeks. If you’re tall (like me, and like Wendy who’s got me beat by about an inch at 5’10”) you’ll be thrilled because these run a bit long. Equestriess Atelier also offers the most adorable hunting flasks, sensational gloves in camo and more. She’s based in Utah, has horses in her back yard and creates a killer flay lay photo. Go do some shopping then follow @equestriess_atelier. Tell her Susan from Saddle Seeks Horse sent you. 🙂

17. The Preppi Pony Company–Lindsey of The Preppi Pony Company is someone I got to know in 2020 via her Esty Equestrian interview! She is a dressage dynamo and prolific creator. What sets Lindsey apart (besides her Southern charm–she lives in Savannah, Georgia) is that her equestrian designs encompass pretty much every discipline from trail riding to fox hunting to barrel racing to Western pleasure to saddle seat. Lindsey’s work is inspired by the Lily Pulitzer, adding a horsey twist to the mix. To get to know Lindsey more in-depth, read her Etsy Equestrian interview and see more of her creations. 18. Mary’s Tack and Feed–Mary’s is my go-to equestrian shopping destination. Yes, it’s basically in San Diego and I live in Los Angeles, but it’s so worth the drive. Although, they do ship across the country so I have shopped online for various horsey needs. As much as I love the in-person customer service at Mary’s, I also really enjoy their Instagram account. I feel informed on what’s new and hip, am made aware of their sales, and even get to hear corny jokes from time to time. If you need a good online tack store, meet and follow @marystackshop.

19. African Horse Safaris–Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Actually, there are no tigers or bears that I’m aware of, but if you want to see stunning photographs of African wildlife such as lions, hippos, giraffes and more, all from a horsey vantage point, follow @africanhorsesafaris now! Also, if you have considered a horse riding safari, you need to read my blog post Horse Safari in Africa: Your Top 10 Burning Questions Answered in which I bust out all the hardball questions regarding riding in Africa (ranging from what is the bathroom situation to how safe is it to ride a prey animal around big cats, for example). You just might be surprised and/or decide to book a horse riding holiday! Tally ho and take me with you!

20. Equistrings–Mindy from Michigan is another creative, entrepreneurial equestrian from my Etsy Equestrian series. Mindy designs gorgeous string art creations–mostly horses, but she can make dogs and other designs (but let’s be honest, pretty much all the bases are covered with horses and dogs!). Mindy started Equistrings in the spring of 2019 after losing two heart horses–one horse from age-related cancer and one from an aortic aneurysm. After losing them she struggled with depression and grief, so string art became a way for her to keep busy. Her endeavor born out of sorrow has brought so much delight to her Etsy customers. 21. Interest Candles–Last but certainly not least, meet Rosanna of the Etsy empire Interest Candle and light your joy! Rosanna is hilarious and super creative. Here’s the Interest Candle origin story in a condensed version: Rosanna was going crazy during the pandemic lockdown so she made funny sayings on labels and placed them on candles she had around the house. She gave them away to some friends and they thought it was awesome. The flame of an idea was lit and she decided to leap headlong into making equestrian-themed candles.
