Trail of Secrets by Laura Wolfe Book Review

My teen niece Mattie is a total bookworm, and for her, libraries are heaven on earth! (Can anyone relate?) Therefore, when I was contacted by author Laura Wolfe (a fine Midwesterner herself) asking to do a book review of her newly released YA novel Trail of Secrets, I knew Mattie was the woman for the job (since she’s an actual young adult). I now present to you Mattie’s review:

Trail of Secrets Book Review by Mattie

Sixteen year old Brynlei gets the chance of a lifetime to attend the elite Foxwoode Riding Academy for three weeks of summer fun in the saddle. She looks forward to spending time with new friends, riding out in the gorgeous northern Michigan woods, and hopes to be named “Top Rider” at the end of the summer. However, she soon begins to feel uneasy when things go awry at camp. Belongings begin to go missing, the creepy stable hand Bruce acts cold and unfriendly, and Brynlei swears someone was watching her on a trail ride in the woods.

Then one night at a campfire someone tells the story of how a fifteen year old camper, Caroline Watson, went missing on a trail ride four years previously. Is Caroline’s ghost playing tricks on the riders? Brynlei is determined to find out who-or what- is lurking around camp, but someone else seems to be just as determined to not let her find out what is going on. Will Brynlei unravel the trail of secrets?

Is Winston photobombing Trail of Secrets or vice versa?

Trail of Secrets was the perfect book to read around Halloween! I would recommend the book to any horse-loving girl that loves a good mystery novel. I found myself wondering who (or what!) was the culprit, but the plot twists kept me guessing until the very end. Brynlei was a fun character, with several quirks that made her story unique but still relatable to other teen girls. There was never a dull moment in the plot of this story! I look forward to reading Laura Wolfe’s future books.
