If you’ve been horse crazy since you were a little kid, perhaps you’ve read (and re-read) the Misty of Chincoteague stories by Marguerite Henry. Or maybe you had the Breyer model horse version of the famous pony from the island. This is a picture of Misty of Chincoteague with my mom’s friend on top. It’s on display in one of my mom’s China cabinets.
The Backstory on the Misty of Chincoteague Photo
The author Marguerite Henry lived in Wayne, Illinois for a time and Misty came to stay with her. My mom’s friend’s family knew the author and so the little girl version of my mom’s friend got to ride the beloved mare. The year was 1952.
Decades later I learned how to ride in Wayne, but by that time Marguerite Henry had moved to California and Misty of Chincoteague had galloped off to greener pastures in the sky.
Going to see the pony swim event on Chincoteague Island is a bucket list item for me. The stories are so sweet and it would be incredible to experience the excitement in real life. The hard part would be leaving without a pony. I have an online blogging friend who adopted her very own Chincoteague pony a couple of years ago thanks to her adoration of Misty of Chincoteague.
P.S. If you don’t know Misty’s story, you HAVE to read the book.
Your Turn: Have you read any of Marguerite Henry’s books? If so, do you have a favorite? What equestrian events are on your bucket list?

I absolutely loved Marguerite Henry’s books when I was a kid! And seeing the pony penning day is on my bucket list, too, even though it’s pretty unlikely.
I’m very envious of your Mom’s friend!
Going to Pony penning day is on my bucket list too!! Let’s make a plan and go!! I sense adventure!! I’m serious – how about next year!?
Sounds great!!!
I loved those books as a kid. I’ve always wanted to go to the Pony Penning, too!
What a great pic! And this one’s on my bucket list too. I savored all these stories when I was young and it is such fun now watching my daughter enjoy them.
I definitely have read all of those books! When my mom was younger she moved to Chincoteague with her family and they lived there for a year. I was there as a baby on family vacation and have photos of me petting the ponies and visiting. I would love to go back as an adult and see a swim.
