How to Make a Pupsicle Frozen Dog Treat

There is nothing better than enjoying an ice cream cone or Popsicle on a hot summer day. Can I get an Amen? Popsicles aren’t just for people, though. They can be for dogs too!

Making a homemade “Pupsicle” frozen dog treat is easy, and your dog will love having a cool snack to enjoy on a sweltering afternoon. I learned this simple technique from my local dog trainer when I took obedience classes (classes being for my dog–I’m fairly obedient already). Both my Golden and Doberman are huge fans.

To make a Pupsicle you will need:

• One can of wet dog food
• A dog toy that can be stuffed. I used a rubber Kong dog toy which worked perfectly for this recipe.
• Two dog treats to seal up the ends of the dog toy. I used two different types of treats for the two different opening sizes.
• A spoon or knife to scoop the dog food into the toy
• A small plastic bag

Seven Steps to the Perfect Pupsicle Frozen Dog Treat

Step 1: First, you will need to prepare the wet dog food that will go inside of the dog toy. Spoon a few scoops of the dog food into a plastic sandwich bag, and about 1-1.5 tablespoons of water.  Knead the bag, seal up the bag, and set it aside.

Step 2: Next, you will need to place a dog treat (or two) at one end of the dog toy. This will ensure all of the wet dog food stays on the inside. Make sure that the dog treat is the right size to cover the opening. I like to drop in a couple of treats such as Charlee Bear to block the small hole

Step 3:  Snip off one corner of the bag. This way you can easily pipe the food into the dog toy without making a mess. Squeeze the wet dog food from the plastic bag into the dog toy.

Step 4: Place another dog treat a the top of the dog toy to seal it up. I use a larger chicken treat for the top because the Kong toy has a larger top opening.

Step 5: Seal the dog toy in a plastic freezer bag and place it in your freezer until the dog treat is completely frozen. This will probably take a few hours.

Step 6: Time to wait! In the meantime, play fetch with your dog or hide and seek. Another option is to sit by the freezer until the Pupsicles are ready like Missie did.

Step 7: Enjoy! Missie dug right in to her icy treat from the comfort of her outdoor dog bed (this can get a little bit messy so I’d recommend not giving the Kong pupsicle to your dog in a carpeted area). When I can find all four of my Kongs, I make all four into pupsicles so my two dogs can be happy two times.
