It’s no secret I’m a Piper Breeches fan (it was one of the first product reviews I did on the blog}, and I found out recently that most of my barn besties are too! On the day I had the talented Lady Photographic come to the barn to take pictures for this SmartPak Piper Mid Rise review, I explained to my trainer, “I’m doing a Piper review,” and she said, “I love my Pipers!” and then there was a chorus of other “I love Pipers too!” that erupted from from near the tack room.
“Let’s take a group shot!” I suggested. So poor Knight had to stand as our backdrop as we tried various poses ranging from Charlie’s Angels to Sorority Sisters to a backside shot that looked a little too risque for this G-rated blog. Here is our best picture: the riders of Le Cheval Sporthorses sporting Pipers.
You can see that we have different body types, but the Pipers are fantastic on all of us. Actually, J (wearing the tan breeches) said hers were the precursor to the Pipers and she bought them like 7 years ago.
My History with Piper Breeches
When I discovered Pipers via a SmartPak catalog a few years ago when I was first getting back into riding, I ordered two pairs, in two different sizes. I’m wary of ordering pants online so I wanted to maximize my possibility of sizing success.
My first Pipers were great–comfy and easy to wash, but I felt like I was truly in between sizes. The larger pair made me feel like I had on mom jeans and the smaller pair made me feel like I was “that girl” who tried to wear pants who were maybe a little too tight. But I did appreciate the “sucking in the gut” factor of the smaller size.
With both of these Pipers I had to wear a belt. If I didn’t have one with the little bit too large size would gap out in the back and I feared in the smaller pair I would have a plumber pants moment. If you don’t know what I mean by plumber pants, click here to read the Urban Dictionary definition. You’re welcome.
Back to my first Piper breeches. I still wear the mom breeches (at “that time” of the month) and I sadly outgrew the smaller ones and so I passed them along to a very appreciative teen rider at my barn. So this alone shows that the Piper line is extremely durable. (My “mom breeches” are now almost four years old.)
Last summer I fell in love with SmartPak’s Hadley Breeches, and I thought it was over between Piper and me. The Hadley’s particular fit was much improved for this horse girl with hips. I always feel like I’m put together as they are a little bit more formal than the Pipers. Read my Hadley review here.
So although I was now a huge Hadley fan, I had read on another equestrian blog that the Piper line featured other fits so I thought I’d give the Piper Mid Rise Breeches a go (thank you to SmartPak for sending me this pair for my honest review).
Mid Rise Pipers, where have you been all my life? That’s all I have to say.
This fit no longer makes me feel like I’m too “poured in” to my pants nor wearing mom jeans. And the colors are super fun like my Lapis blue with Orange Spice trim. Almost every time I have worn these breeches I have gotten a compliment. (Everyone loves this bright hue of blue!)
So if you have tried Piper breeches before and felt like they just weren’t quite right for your particular shape, you should definitely check out their Mid Rise breeches because they just might be your perfect match.

I love my original Pipers! I finally broke down and joined the trend a couple months ago when my favorite old pair of breeches died. I got one KP and one FS and love both of them. I’d heard you MUST wear a belt, so I was prepared, and it is true. I like a little extra room in the waist as opposed to the hips, and they seem to fit my shape well. One totally random detail that I LOVE is that there is a layer of fabric covering the back of the metal hooks on the waist that normally rub against your skin in other brands. These are all I wear now! Stretchy but plenty of heft to the material so you aren’t embarrassed to stop at the store after the barn.
This is really a great description, Holly. I didn’t even realize that about the layer of fabric covering the hooks. Thanks for pointing that out.
Has the fabric gotten any better from the originals? I tried them a few years ago and had fit issues plus I really did not like the fabric at all. Or the contrast piping. But I know they’ve started branching out a bit since then.
Amanda, I’m not sure what the original fabric was like, but I really like this fabric. It’s definitely very different from say a Tailored Sportsman or more traditional breech, but I like the feel and resiliency. I feel like they’re durable. If contrast piping is not your thing then maybe they won’t work for you. But I think I’ve seen them with some colors where it blends more.
I like my pipers well enough. I have many pairs at this point because I love the color combos plus I have a shopping problem. But I will agree with Amanda on the fabric. I like it for comfort and all, but I’ve found they pill pretty quickly and look warn after not too many washings. I ride in my backyard though, so it doesn’t bother me much. I am a little between sizes as well. When I tried the midrise, I ordered the smaller size, and they seemed a bit more snug than the regular ones. I would recommend going to the next size for the mid rise if you’re in between.
Now that you say that about the pilling, I’m going to go inspect them. I think I’ve worn them about 10-12 times so far. I know my old pairs from several years ago have some pilling but I can’t fault them–they’re been through the wringer!
I noticed some pilling on the inside of the thighs – I’ve only had mine a short time and washed maybe 3x. But as long as they hold together I don’t mind!
I LOVE my Piper breeches. I have…6(?) pairs. I don’t want to actually count and be confronted with how much money I’ve spent on breeches. I’ve tried several different brands, but I keep coming back to the Pipers. I find that I don’t get too hot or too cold, which is a huge bonus for me. The originals are my favorite but lately I’ve been riding in the mid-rise silicon breech for a little extra sticking power as the “spring dragons” have set in among the horses. I’ve had at least two pairs for 4+ years with minimal pilling. The one pair does have a tear in the pocket…but that was do to an exuberant pony who just couldn’t wait for that carrot.
If you do end up counting how many you have, you won’t have to feel too bad since they are a fairly reasonable price point. Also, they frequently go on sale for like 20% off (I think today it’s for Valentine’s Day.) And I’m curious about your silicone knee patch ones. I have a different pair of breeches (not Pipers) with silicone. I love their look, but they squeak when I ride and it drives my crazy. Do your Pipers squeak?
I have the full seat pair and, so far, no squeaking! The Kerrits breeches (for me) squeak something fierce. The full seat breeches do leave the pattern of the silicon on my saddle, but it fades quickly.
And I don’t feel too bad about the breeches (my poor attempt at humor, haha). They are extremely reasonably priced and I get the free shipping with SmartPerks. I am a fan of SmartPak all the way around. 🙂
I love the color and the fact that everyone else at the barn wears them! You’re in the cool kids club ; )
