Halloween is around the corner and what better way to celebrate the strange, yet beloved holiday than by dressing up your horse in costume. And you get to dress up too, by the way. I perused Instagram to see the creative ideas of fellow horse lovers and came up with a small batch of clever horse Halloween Costume ideas. Which one do you like?

1.Pumpkin Patch. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. No, actually it’s an entire pumpkin patch. This seems like a straightforward costume which will not scare small children. You might even be able to recycle the idea for Thanksgiving as pumpkin decor seems acceptable until the end of November.

2. Dollar Bill. I LOVE this one because a.) it’s awesome, b.) the horse’s expression, c.) the symbolism. Although, let’s be honest, if a horse were to walk around as money, a $100 bill would be more true to real life. I don’t know what a $500 bill looks like, but that’s what Google’s for. And determining whether obscure celebrities are living or dead.

3. Superman. I know this one is more of an ad, but you have to admit the Sleezy wear (under blanket lining) lends itself really well to a super hero costume. For that matter you could probably fashion a Batman, Spiderman, or Green Lantern costume out of black, red, and green respectively.

4. Cougar and Chippendales. This one blends awkward and ridiculous into perfection. Enough said.

BTW. . . if you want to see pictures from our barn Halloween costume party last year, click here.

5. Mummy/Zombie. If you are pressed for time and don’t want to run to the craft store, you can grab some TP and drape it around your horse. The only downside I can forsee with this costume is it’s durability. This is also a fun activity to use with bored children. Grab a Barbie and you can “mummify” her (there are seriously lesson plans for mummifed Barbie online, which I think is just plain creepy).

6. Pinata. If you are not pressed for time, this would be an amazing horse Halloween costume. Like the idea of using a Sleezy (see number 3) this one has a Sleezy base with what looks like felt sewn on. After that get your scissors and maybe a friend or two with their scissors. You also might want to test this one out on your horse first.

7. A Horse (of course!). A simple idea. Although my husband Mark said he thought it was a cow. He got hung up on how the muzzle is not really a horse muzzle, but a large, bulbous mouth (clearly not equine).  I like how the person as horse matches the actual horse in color. Maybe they’re actually going as twins.

Our barn party is coming up this weekend and if I can find my blond Afro wig, I will be going as a disco diva. Knight, my horse, will be wearing his latest in flashing disco wear (a.k.a. Illumiseen High Visibility Breastplate). Now I just need to find a mirrored disco ball.

Your Turn: What is the best horse Halloween costume idea you have ever seen (or been)?

Let’s be friends! You can follow Knight and me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Tally ho! And Happy Halloween!

I’ve always loved the creativity my friend who is a trainer puts into her client’s costumes. One year she did a dragon with flapping wings, and the spider in this article is one of her Junior riders:

She always would take the time to make sure the horses were very desensitized to their costumes.
