The sun is consistently so bright where I ride in Southern California, even with sunglasses, I squint. This is problematic because who wants to live life with vertical squint lines between their eyebrows? Not me. Enter EquiVisor to the rescue!

Thank you EquiVisor/Intrepid International for sponsoring this post.

Twinning with Carey in our EquiVisors! (All photos shot by Lady Photographic.)

I have been riding with an EquiVisor for about three years now and can’t fathom life without one. If you haven’t already been won over by this essential equestrian accessory, read on while I share my honest opinion with you.

There are many reasons to add an EquiVisor (or two) to your wardrobe. Fending off squint lines is just the tip of the iceberg. I’ll be honest, when I first started noticing them pop up in riding arenas near me, I thought they looked a bit ridiculous–like a Little House on the Prairie bonnet. But now I’m a total convert. Here’s why.

1. You Can Wear It Like A Regular Visor

The EquiVisor can be worn with or without a helmet. I generally have a large sunhat in my tack locker, but there are days I’ve worn it home from the barn and then forgot to bring it back to the barn. No problem. All I have to do is adjust the Velcro on the EquiVisor smaller and wear it as a regular visor.

Stays on mid-flight.

2. Machine Washable

Another reason to love it! If your EquiVisor gets dusty or slimed by your horse, all you have to do is throw it in the wash on gentle cycle and then hang to dry. (Note: I have not washed my jute visor.)

3. Comes in Several Colors

The first EquiVisor I bought was the jute version. I thought it looked summery–like a straw hat. I wanted a light color too so that it wouldn’t be a magnet for the blinding rays of the sun. I recently acquired the chocolate brown version thanks to this collaboration. The EquiVisor comes in black (which is nice because it blends in with most riding helmets), green, burgundy and denim.

4. Stays On

This is the best feature: a patented gripper system ensures the EquiVisor will snugly conform to the brim of your helmet. It will be your helmet’s steady companion from a walk to a gallop. It will stick even soaring over jumps!

Here’s a good view to see the side width.

5. Shades Without an Obstructed View

The EquiVisor has a large brim extending out to the sides, to keep the rays out of your peripheral vision, but you can easily see from under the “umbrella” it provides in the saddle. I have had no problems seeing my path whether on trail or on a jump course.

6. Blocks Both UVA and UVB Rays

According to the tag, it says the EquiVisor has been “laboratory tested and found to block 100% of UVA and UVB rays!” Although I love being outside and in the sun, I don’t want to burn or run the risk of skin cancer. (But in all honestly, I’m most concerned about warding off wrinkles! I know, that might be a bit shallow. I’m okay with it.)

7. Twin With Your Equestrian Friends

I’ll admit this is kind of a silly reason, but why not match your gal pals? Carey is not my only visor twin. Isabelle from Modern Equestrian is a total EquiVisor girl (I think she has one in almost every color–so lucky). My trainers have EquiVisors. My guess is you might even be an EquiVisor fan too. If not, join a family of like-minded horse peeps who prioritize safe fun in the sun (and look cute!).

My barn friend gave me her old helmet visor (no idea what brand), and it felt very heavy on my helmet so I gave up wearing it. Do you feel the weight of these? For now I am just sunscreen & sunglasses with my helmet.

I don’t even notice it. I’m happy to let you borrow mine when I come by to meet Artie!

Mine won’t stay on unless I duck tape it.

Oh no! I wonder why that is. Hmmm. . . I bet you could reach out to the company and ask about that–see if there’s a fix.

Awww, thanks, L! We got some amazing actions shots of Mo over the big fences too! Alas, that will be for another post. 🙂

Nice review covering many aspects of the product! I’ve seen these visors and they look great! The outdoor ring at my barn has a white footing that reflects light, so when it’s sunny out, the light bounces back up and is blinding. It probably bothers the horses, too. Maybe there should be a fly mask/visor combo for them. 😉

Thanks for reading, Rhonda! You are so right! Different footing surfaces can be super reflective. I saw on the EquiVisor Facebook Page someone posted a fun picture of their horse wearing the EquiVisor. 🙂

I just got one, but i feel weird about going into the lesson ring with it on. any tips?

I say, Velcro the visor on proudly and throw your shoulders back, head high and trot around and know you are not just a trendsetter, but you are protecting your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. It’s a healthy and wise choice. 😉
