Knight has pretty good ground manners, but his dinner table manners are quite appalling. I had just hosed him off after a riding lesson when he returned to his stall and made a complete mess of his face.

Don’t bother me. I’m busy.

You’d never know he loves his food so much by his peekaboo ribs that greet us from time to time.

He lost some weight at the horse show a couple of weeks ago. My husband was skeptical that a horse could lose noticeable weight in the span of being away from his home for a few days, but I swear he looked more like a beanpole upon returning from the weekend.

Nom, nom, nom, slurp.

His rice bran and beet pulp concoction is fed to him in the now-gunky black bucket. You’ll notice he is also eating from the green hay feeder. He manages to slurp the yumminess and it falls into the adjacent larger green bucket.

And then he’ll drop some on the bar of his pipe corral. But he goes back to clean it up later.

Must get every drop!

When I left the barn after my lesson, I thought of those pictures of little kids in high-chairs wearing their meals on their faces. And that is how he will look when I see him next. Slightly crusty. In the forelock and above his nose.

At least he is happy!

Mealtime is serious business.

Comments: Have you ever had a pet (or person) who ate with gusto to the point of ridiculousness? Do tell.

      I know. It’s like a guy with a beard.

My horse is also slightly ridiculous when it comes to food. He’ll beg for treats and when he thinks that he hasn’t had enough he’ll pick his bucket up with his teeth and throw it at me.

That’s amazing! Please get a video of that and post it. My goodness!

Wow, even Cosmo doesn’t get his in his forelock. He eats out of a larger, lower-sided feeder. I have to drag it to the middle of his stall or he gets it all over the rails and all up over his face.

Knight has a shallower bucket too. But the dragging it into the middle gets old.

Miles is really embarrassing during feed time. He FLINGS his bucket with every bite, making loud, raucous noises like he’s never seen grain in his entire life. And then proceeds to snuffle the ground for any pellets that fell.

My Golden Retriever acts like he’s never had a meal before too. He eats soooo fast and then hangs around nonchalantly until my Doberman is finished eating (she is SLOW). Then he’ll return and lick her bowl clean. They’re all ridiculous.

Manny does the EXACT same thing! I swear he wears most of his weekly bran mash. I love to see it though because he’s so happy when he’s eating it.
