When I first “met” SmartPak Piper breeches, I liked the name, I liked the price point and so I bought not one but TWO pairs of breeches at the same time. I justified my splurge in that I ordered two different sizes, not sure which one would fit me. In the end I kept both pairs and I’m still satisfied with that decision. (Because sometimes a gal needs a “that time of the month” pair o’ breeches!)

SmartPak Piper Breeches

SmartPak Piper Breeches in Military Green with Black trim. Golden Retriever not for sale.

At this point I’ve had my SmartPak Pipers since summer of 2014 (a long time!) and I can tell you why I think they’re terrific.

  1. Figure flattering. This is the most important detail of all, right ladies? The smaller size that I ordered in military green with black (which I perceive as more of a dark brownish green–more on the brown side) fit quite snug–in a good way. I am reminded of how sleek I feel wearing a wetsuit. These breeches kind of have that effect. I’m happy to report they really hide cellulite!
  1. They look clean even when on a second (or third) wearing. I don’t wash my jeans after just one wearing (unless I get really slimed by one of the dogs). Same with the Piper breeches; they seems to repel grime fairly well.
  1. They can be worn as “civilian” clothes (as approved by a teenage fashionista). I tried on faux riding breeches at White House Black Market a few months ago. On the hanger they were cute. On me not so much. I literally thought, “If the equestrian look is in, shouldn’t I just wear real riding clothes?” This way I could justify buying more riding wear.

I am still reeling from the surprise the day my husband and I rotated our California king mattress (I was standing somehow on the box spring in my military green Pipers) and my stepdaughter said, “Those are really cute pants!” I thanked her and said that they were technically riding pants.

She said, “I would wear those as regular clothes.” From an Orange County teenage girl who keeps up with fashion trends, that’s a huge endorsement.

  1. Great price point. From time to time an extra discount in the 10-15% range is offered so that’s certainly helpful.
  1. Easy to wash. I don’t have to baby these breeches to get them clean. I throw them in with the rest of my laundry and then hang them to dry.

In pants I usually wear an 8 or 10. These are the 30L.

Additional Details on SmartPak Piper Breeches

  • I have gotten numerous compliments when I’ve worn these breeches. That’s fun!!!
  • The larger size gives me the sensation that my backside is exposed if I’m not wearing a belt (even though I’ve forgotten it in a lesson and I told my trainer–she said I was definitely NOT showing skin.) This is not a big deal to me because I just wear a belt.
    • There is a large-ish SmartPak logo which might throw off people who don’t like logos, but it doesn’t bother me (it’s more obvious on my Wheat with Teal 32 longs).
  • Pipers come in both regular and long (which I appreciate being a tall gal). They also have a plus size version and a full seat version.
  • The customer service is wonderful and on par with Nordstrom, so even if you order them and they’re not right for you, the team at SmartPak will do their best to make sure you are happy.

Have you tried SmartPak Piper breeches? What were your impressions? Is there another brand you like for every-day breeches? If you’re not a rider (yet), would you wear riding breeches for fashion?

Hey those are super cute pants! And they look/fit really nice on you too. You could totally wear them as regular clothing! Wear those pants with the boots, then add a cute top on and bam. Perfect outfit! 🙂

You’re definitely my biggest fan, Charlotte. I appreciate your support. If I decide to wear them to school, I’ll let you know ahead of time. 🙂

I have tried them, and I think they are pretty darn good for schooling. I have trouble with the extra material in the knee area, though. Can’t beat the price!

I totally agree “Darn good.” Love it! I haven’t had a problem in the knee area. Hmmm. . . Maybe I have fat knees.

Are they ladies breeches worn by men?
    Zipper at correct side?
I’m personally happy to wear ladies breeches….I wear women’s long boots so breeches are ok.
I do think that women’s fit for tight breeches are great for men…

Yes, if you ordered Pipers it would be ladies breeches being worn by a man. The zipper is on the “correct” side for women. 🙂 Not sure if I agree with you on women’s tight breeches looking good on men, but I guess it’s a personal preference thing. What brand of breeches do you currently have success wearing?

If you have a USEF membership, you also get an extra 5% off at SmartPak. 🙂

Wow! That’s good to know. So does that mean a total of 15% off if you are USEF and have a SmartPak supplement subscription?

nice! i wasn’t totally sold on the pipers right away… but noticed after a while that i was grabbing them from the pile more often than otherwise. so i was thrilled to see one of the color combos go on clearance a few weeks back and snatched them up immediately! they really are a great pair of pants!

Thanks for your feedback, Emma. I have to confess if they were jeans, I wouldn’t buy them. I like wearing a certain brand of jeans that fits me perfectly, almost-custom it seems. I don’t feel like the Pipers fit me as precisely as they could, but I’m okay with it because they’re so hardy and the belt works wonders. That’s just me. 🙂

I really like my Pipers as well!

I get that they’re not for everyone, but if they work (as they do for us) they’re a great value. 🙂 Thanks for commenting!
