Have you ever finished a stint in the saddle and realized you were experiencing a level of discomfort “down there?” Does an old injury make you tentative to sit in the textbook riding position for fear of pain in your tuchus? Recently an anonymous equestrian who had a tailbone injury two years ago shared with me she has plunged into the world of protective horse riding underwear. I was eager to hear more and asked for this interview. Enjoy!

What inspired you to try out Equetech horse riding underwear?

A couple of years ago I hurt my tailbone when I fell off a horse and landed on a paved road. I had my tailbone X-rayed, and thankfully it wasn’t broken. However, it still hurts from time to time and I have to sit a certain way on a chair. When I now ride, I am a bit restricted in how I sit, because of my tailbone. I’m back in the saddle leasing a horse, and have had some riding “complications.”

I Googled “sore crotch when riding horses” because I was experiencing just that. Equetech popped up and I ordered two pairs. I wear silky underwear under them because there is a lot of padding and they are pretty stiff. <Laughs> This is awkward to talk about.

But I read other reviews and realized I was not alone. I actually researched this quite a bit.

Pssst!!!! Love Marguerite Henry books? Check out the Marguerite Henry biography I wrote.

Describe the Equetech underwear–what do they look like, how do they feel?

The color options are white or black. They’re very soft with an elastic waistband about an inch wide. The one I ordered is 92% cotton and 8% elastine, and they’re made in the UK. The instructions say to wash inside out. The padding is in the front from the front of the crotch all the way but also in the back. They seem to run true to size.

I read online they might show through your breeches–panty lines–but who cares if you’re comfortable. I ordered a size up because I don’t like to wear things too tight. Also, it’s winter and I wear layers so it’s not that obvious–the padding.

When you first put them on, what did you think?

They were stiff, but they were comfortable.

What did you think during that inaugural ride?

Let’s just say there was success using it–I wasn’t as sore. I liked them so much I even decided to buy a pair in black.

Any other final thoughts on horse riding underwear?

Comfort is key, and so far so good.

In Conclusion: Susan’s Final Observations

I’ve witnessed this anonymous equestrian ride, and you could not tell from the ground she had on padded riding underwear. Also, I recently had my saddle re-flocked. I was starting to feel like I was too close to the pommel when I rode the posting trot. I shared this with my saddle fitter and she was able to plump up the wool (not the technical description of adding flocking) and I now don’t have that “Yikes, I’m dangerously close to hitting my crotch on the pommel” feeling. So if you feel like your saddle is not comfortable in front, tell your saddle fitter.

One other thing, when I hurt my tailbone, I had several chiropractic visits and went to physical therapy. I remember the PT had me ride on a exercise bike for short sessions and do the yoga pose happy baby. If you have discomfort in the saddle, it might help to explore options such as saddle fit, chiropractic care, in addition to horse riding underwear. Don’t let pain “down there” keep you from enjoying horses. There are so many ways to make yourself as comfortable as possible.

Yes. I used Glide — a rub on stick recommended by bikers and long distance riders. Putting a cashell reverse pad backwards on the saddle also helps esp when topped with sheepskin. I used saddlebum riding pants — the product you mentioned wasnt invented yet. When you really want to ride, you find a way!
