Have you ever searched for the perfect unicorn of a horse fly bonnet, but couldn’t find the right colors, trim or ear size? That same thing happened to Brittany Testa, a horse girl from Maryland back in 2013. She searched high and low for a navy with kelly green and white trim fly bonnet and couldn’t find one ANYWHERE.

Thank you to Bascule Bonnets for sponsoring this post.

So Brittany taught herself how to crochet and made her own. (Because we horse girls are smart and problem solvers!) Warrior, Brittany’s 4-H, Pony Club, dressage and trick-trained Thoroughbred, looked handsome sporting his new navy fly bonnet that totally matched Brittany’s existing tack bags!

Today Brittany is the proud owner of Bascule Bonnets and handcrafts fully customizable horse fly bonnets for ponies and even minis! Brittany loves the portability of her fly bonnet side hustle–she crochets from the beach, the couch, the car–and it’s quite a departure from her horse-related day job. Brittany is the breeding manager at Hilltop Farm, a position she jokingly refers to as specializing in “horse semen sales.”

The turnaround time from order to delivery for most Bascule Bonnets is brisk–about 1-2 weeks. If Brittany needs to order special colors or trim (may we suggest rhinestone ribbon for the ultimate sparkle?) for your special horse fly bonnet, it could take up to 2-4 weeks. The mercerized yarn used in a Bascule Bonnet stays smooth, maintaining a slight sheen. Therefore, Bascule bonnets won’t fuzz, but they will create a buzz. The only limit to color, style, size and bling is your imagination!

The Bascule Bonnets Team

Each Bascule Bonnet is sewn with care from Brittany’s home workspace shared with her sister Jennifer, a painter. Two Jack Russells, Bailey and Beckett, oversee the sisters’ art while lounging from the comfort of their dog beds.

If you’re wondering about Warrior’s role in Brittany’s fly bonnet production these days, Brittany said, ”Warrior has modeled in a few photos for me; though, he tends to find photos boring and beneath him.” He has retired from both riding and modeling, but Brittany is still in the saddle, atop a friend’s Holsteiner mare named Fergie.

Question: Does your horse wear a fly bonnet? If so, what colors and styles are your favorite? Have you found it difficult to find the exact kind you want off the shelf?
