Before I owned a horse, I read every single book I could about them, spending hours in the 636 section at the library–any Dewey Decimal system fans out there? I wrote stories with main characters who loved horses and longed to have a horse of their own. Now that I’m a grown up and have a horse, I still love to write about horses. You might like writing about horses too, or know someone who does, and that is why I wrote Unbridled Creativity: 101 Writing Exercises for the Horse Lover.

Part composition book with lined pages, part creative journal to spark your own stories and cure post-barn boredom (because let’s be honest–you can’t spend all of your waking hours on top of a horse) Unbridled Creativity will be the riding writer’s new best friend.

Prompts Crafted by a Real Life English Teacher (That’s me!)

Fun Fact: The writing prompts in Unbridled Creativity: 101 Writing Exercises for the Horse Lover are not just random questions I thought up while commuting to and from the barn (although I did put a lot of thought time into this project during my 75-mile one way barn commute). They have been formed based on writing prompts I’ve used in the classroom which helped even the most reluctant writer to unfurl their ideas. If you’re new around here and didn’t know this, I am a credentialed English and history teacher with over 20 years in the classroom.

I believe the writing prompts in this fun lil’ book will be appropriate for all ages of horse lovers, from tweens on up to seniors.

In addition to the 101 writing prompts, I provide a list of 12 ways to be a better writer along with several mentor texts based on the prompts. In fancy educational terms, mentor texts are writing samples that will give the struggling writer or someone with writer’s block a leg up by seeing an idea of how to respond to the prompt. (Any homeschoolers out there with kids who love horses? The mentor text feature will be super helpful.)

Work Through Unbridled Creativity in Any Order

You can work your way through Unbridled Creativity’s writing prompts from #1 to #101, or you can skip around and pick and choose the horse-themed writing prompts that speak to you the most. I happen to really love the section with all the photo prompts. (I’ll never forget the day I saw the clock at the barn and there were no hands–see the picture above–lol!)

Riders who respond to the Unbridled writing prompts are encouraged to share their writing on social media by tagging me @saddleseekshorse! I’d love to read your stories!
