My life goal is to one day have my riding clothes outnumber my normal, “street clothes” and the category leading the way in my closet so far is riding shirts; I feel I’m equipped to judge sun shirts as I’ve worn many brands. Here I will share the winning details of the Anique sun shirt and discuss how they perform relative to the competition.

Discovering Anique Sun Shirts

My friend Carey knows all the cool horse things. She worked for a while at Mary’s Tack and Feed and it was hard for me to leave that tack shop empty-handed with her as my personal shopper. I have memories of telling the cashier not to say aloud the total of my purchase, and I would look away from the register and hand over my Visa. So when Carey told me about her newfound love of Anique sun shirts, I had to board the bandwagon. She has yet to steer me wrong. But I digress.

“I want to replace all my sun shirts,” Carey told me when her Anique addiction began. She loves them because the arms are long, the torso is long and they are a flattering fit. She also said they are comfy when wet (she must sweat more than me–lol! actually she is a competitive rider and jumps big things, so she should sweat more than me.) Lastly, Carey said the Anique sun shirts dry quickly.

Why I Adore Anique Sun Shirts

I’m not going to lie. I love the Anique sun shirts because they have the most figure-flattering fit out of all the brands of sun shirts I’ve ridden in. I’ve long been a Kastel fan (see my Kastel review here), but the Anique shirts just look better on me. They enhance what needs enhancing and minimize what needs minimizing. Put bluntly, they make me look busty and the design is slimming. They kinda trick the eye to make you believe you are slimmer than reality. Lol! They actually remind me a ton of my fitted Lululemon shirts which are lightweight and so much more attractive than a basic cotton T-shirt.

Similar to the figure-flattering point, the weave of material has a beautiful design which I believe makes for the great shape. As you look at the front of the top, it has a bit of an hour-glass silhouette with almost an empire-wait line under the bustline. The elbows have what reminds me of a chevron-shaped V, and the sleeves have a design that looks like an extra-long cuff where it meets the hands. The design on the back is equally impressive. I think it is hard to explain but you’ll get the idea from the photo. Also, the logo is simple and unobtrusive–I like that a ton.

Notice the intricate design of the fabric weave and simple logo on back.

Another aspect I’m wild about with the Anique sun shirt is that it is made in the USA! How often do you find riding clothes made stateside? Not often. So when I purchased these shirts, even though I was paying a higher price than if it were made in China, I felt good about the transaction. (If you like to read you might enjoy The Conscious Closet, a book I read that opened my eyes to the world of fashion and shopping.)

I also agree with Carey about the sleeve length being long. I’ve noticed there is no gap between my riding gloves and the sleeves of the Anique shirt, so that’s important for those of us equestrians of a certain age who are trying to preserve our skin. 🙂

Anique Sun Shirts Slay Street Style & Travel

So in addition to the Anique shirts looking great, having a unique design and being made in America, it’s worth pointing out that these tops are a great basic that can be worn both in and out of the saddle. I frequently wore mine as I taught online school this past year. I haven’t tried it yet, but they would probably also look cute under a denim jacket or with a business-y dressy kind of jacket too. The fashion options are endless.

It’s also worth saying, due to the nature of the nylon, this is going to be a great piece for traveling (now that the world has opened back up again). They wash beautifully and I just hang on a hanger to dry. I could envision washing it in a hotel sink and simply hanging it over a shower rod to dry by the next morning.

Concluding Thoughts on Anique Sun Shirts

When I ordered my first Anique there was a buy-one-get-one deal going on, so keep an eye out for their sales around the holidays. Also, with my first order I got a 10% discount code for my next order–so that’s also helpful.

Unique style, fashion from street to stable, ease of washing and traveling practicality are just some of the reasons I’ve become a huge fan. The one aspect I would tweak a little, if I had a magic wand is the cool factor–and by that I mean temperature. I’m not convinced the Anique shirt is the best sun shirt for the hottest of temperatures. I don’t deal with a ton of humidity here in SoCal, so I can’t attest to how it is in humidity (maybe some of you readers can comment on that?). Aside from that one point, it is a winner of a sun shirt and I think you would be happy to have one to call your very own too.

Not to take anything away from Anique, Kastel or any other magical equestrian sun/technical shirts out there, but I recently discovered that GOLF SHIRTS are equally magical in terms of sun protection and moisture wicking ability, and a LOT (lot) less expensive to purchase. These are easier to find in short-sleeved versions, but there are cute long-sleeved ones out there too.
